Conestee Nature Preserve (CNP) is eager for the return of its free Field Trip programs for public schools, beginning September 12th, and excited to share recognition for the local partners who are generously supporting. This beloved educational initiative provides thousands of students with immersive, hands-on learning experiences in nature, completely free of charge.
So far this fall, 1,770 students are scheduled to attend the Preserve on field trips, with 30% coming from Title I schools. These free programs ensure equitable access to environmental education for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
Conestee’s field trips are designed to align with South Carolina state science standards, blending classroom lessons with real-world exploration. Students might test water quality in the Reedy River, identify native plants and animals along forested trails, or study the unique wetlands that make Conestee a biodiversity hotspot. These activities not only deepen students’ understanding of science concepts but also encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and appreciation for the natural world.
“The impact of these trips lasts well beyond a day at the Preserve,” said Erin Knight, Executive Director. “We see children afraid to enter the forest when they arrive but leave saying ‘This was the best day of my life!’ There’s a transformation happening as we reconnect them with nature. One that will continually serve their health and development. That’s especially vital for children from underserved communities. Many of them express they’ve never done anything like this before, and their joy of discovery is contagious!”
This Fall’s programs are made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Conestee’s sponsors:
● Fluor Foundation - $12,500 (providing environmental education throughout the school year)
● Milliken & Company – $10,000 (September sponsor)
● Gilreath Foundation – $15,000 (October sponsor and funding for Education program supplies)
● Upstate Master Naturalist Association – $9,000 (November sponsor and funding for new
educational storage and boots)
Together, these contributions not only sustain Conestee’s Fall Field Trips but also extend into supporting Winter and Spring programs, ensuring that thousands more students will benefit from the Preserve’s hands-on, standards-based environmental education throughout the school year. Conestee Nature Preserve extends heartfelt gratitude to these sponsors for their commitment to fostering the next generation of environmental stewards.
